Message from the Learning Catchball

I am Taro Koyanagi, I was a Japanese teacher at Japanese school in Tokyo and started up the Learning Catchball in 2009 to help people to learn Japanese.

Online language exchange program

You can learn Japanese conversation, basic Japanese from our Japanese member for free in exchange for helping him/her with English conversation practice for free.

Learn and practice Japanese regularly(e.g.1 to 3 times a week)
You can take language exchange lessons with our Japanese member regularly, so you can expect to practice Japanese a lot and improve your Japanese skills.

First you can take trial language exchange lessons with our Japanese member several times with no charge and check if it works or not. If you like to try, please click the 『Go to the application form』 at the bottom of this page and submit your application form.

Learning Catchball Japanese members

Learn Japanese:
Our Japanese members are all native Japanese speakers and eager to learn and teach language. Please tell us what you like to learn in the application form. They will be happy to help you learn Japanese.

Help our Japanese member with English conversation practice :
Our Japanese members have basic English grammar skills, but they are not good at speaking English because they have few opportunities to practice conversation. So please have conversation with them in English and help them to improve their English speaking skills.

How to start

StepⅠ:Application

Application fee

0 yen

After we receive your application form, we'll send you our Japanese member's profile as your language partner's candidate.

After you check the member's profile,
if you like to take trial language exchange lessons with the member, we will exchange your email address with the member's email address.
If you don't accept the Japanese member, we will try to arrange other Japanese members for you.

Step Ⅱ:Trial language exchange

Trial language exchange period

1 month

There's no fee for taking trial language exchange lessons several times within 1 month after we forward our Japanese member's email address to you.

During the trial period, you can talk with the Japanese member about how to do the language exchange lessons each other and check if language exchange lessons with the Japanese member work well or not.

After trial language exchange lessons,
If you decide to continue the language exchange with the Japanese member, please go to Step Ⅲ and pay the introduction(matching) fee
If you decide not to continue, you don't need to pay the introduction(matching) fee. We will try to arrange other members for you if you like.

Step Ⅲ:Payment(only if you decide to continue)

Lesson fee	0 yen
Introduction(matching) fee	10,000 yen

Only if both you and our Japanese member decide to continue the language exchange, we will charge you the introduction(matching) fee.

Introduction(matching) fee is one-time payment per matching with a Japanese member(language partner)

Paypal : We would like you to make this payment with paypal or wise(bank transfer).
